Autoprinter vs Printrooster
Does Printrooster print orders automatically? Its listing and help center describe no automatic printing: it sorts new orders under printing buttons, and you click a button to print each batch. Autoprinter prints them for you, sending packing slips and invoices to your own printers as orders come in, and prints Shopify shipping labels with zero clicks.
Printrooster Order Printing, by Approosters, sorts your Shopify orders under printing buttons you set up, each with its own filters and template. You print a button's orders as a batch, with a picking list as the last page, and printed orders move out of the queue so they aren't printed twice. Templates are coded in HTML, CSS and Liquid, and its Enterprise plan adds packing slips for each location of a split order.
If you print in batches by hand and want orders sorted for you, Printrooster may be all you need. If you want printing to happen without you, that is what Autoprinter is for.

Why choose Autoprinter over Printrooster
- Prints by itself. Packing slips and invoices print when an order is placed, paid or fulfilled, with nobody pressing Print.
- Zero-click shipping labels. Buy a label in Shopify as usual and it comes out of your label printer, with no print dialog.
- Every document an order needs, together. The Print Chain prints each order's packing slip, invoice, return slip or gift receipt in one go: automatically, or from the order's More actions menu with Auto Print Chain.
- Labels, sheets and receipt rolls, each on its own printer. Letter, A4, 4 × 6 labels and 80 mm or 58 mm receipts go straight to the printer that matches.
- No code needed. Built-in templates are set up with switches and print in six languages, and Print Rules choose the template for each order.
- Know when printing stops. Autoprinter warns you when a Print Station stops picking up jobs, and a Shopify Flow trigger can run when a Print Station goes offline.
At a glance
| Topic | Printrooster | Autoprinter |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic printing | Not described No automatic printing is described. New orders are sorted under printing buttons automatically, and a person prints them by clicking a button or choosing Print with Printrooster in the Shopify orders list. | Yes The documents you choose print by themselves when an order is placed, paid or fulfilled, with nobody pressing Print. You pick the trigger and turn it on in Settings. |
| Shipping labels | Not described Not described in its listing or documentation. Its templates can make returns labels and product labels. | Yes Zero-click. Buy a label in Shopify, click Print shipping label as usual, and it comes out of your label printer with no print dialog. Needs Google Chrome with the Autoprinter Chrome Extension; you keep buying labels in Shopify. |
| Print Chain | Partly Each printing button prints its own template for a batch of orders, with a picking list as the last page; a person clicks the button each time. | Yes Every document an order needs prints together, each on its own printer: automatically, or from the order's More actions menu with Auto Print Chain. |
| Printers and paper sizes | How a print reaches your printer is not described. Each template's page size is set in millimeters; named sizes such as A4, Letter or 4 × 6 are not described. | Straight to your printers, on the right paper. Prints to any printer on a Windows or macOS computer through the Autoprinter Desktop Utility, or from your browser. Paper sizes are Letter, A4, 4 × 6 in thermal labels, and 80 mm or 58 mm receipt rolls, and the paper size decides which printer gets each document. |
| Templates | Coded in HTML, CSS and Liquid, starting from ready-made templates, and the developer offers to help build a template for you. How many templates and printing buttons you get depends on the plan. | No code needed. Built-in templates you adjust with switches and drop-downs, plus 30+ sample templates. Custom templates in HTML and CSS with Handlebars-style variables. No limit on the number of templates, on any plan. |
| Print history and alerts | Partly Printed batches are listed on its front page for reprinting, with a Printed yes or no filter. Printer alerts are not described. | Yes Know when printing stops. Print History lists the documents queued for your Print Stations, with each job's status. Autoprinter warns you when a Print Station stops picking up jobs, and a Shopify Flow trigger can run when a Print Station goes offline. |
| Choosing a document per order | Yes Each printing button has its own filters and template, such as order status, shipping zone and method, tags, product type or vendor, order total and weight. The template applies when a person prints from that button. | Yes Print Rules choose which template prints, and on which Print Station, for each order. A rule can match more than 15 order details, such as sales channel, tags, SKU, product collection, fulfillment location, ship-to country and order total. |
| Orders split across locations | Yes On its Enterprise plan: packing slips for each shipment of a split order, and printing buttons and prints for each location. Order templates still show the whole order. | Yes One packing slip per location. An order split across fulfillment locations gets a packing slip for each location, listing only that location's items, or one set for the whole order if you pack in one place. |
| Bulk printing | Yes Batches from each printing button, with a picking list as the last page. Printed orders move to their own section so they aren't printed twice, and earlier batches can be reprinted. Batch size is not described. | Yes Select orders in the Shopify orders list and send their documents to your printers, or open one combined preview and print it from your browser. A pick slip covers up to 50 orders. |
| Documents | Invoices, packing slips, picking lists, returns labels and customs declaration papers, plus product labels from a template sized to the label. | Packing slips, invoices, pick slips, return slips and gift receipts. Sample templates add sales receipts, kitchen tickets and pickup slips. |
| Document languages | Yes Its listing includes multi-language customization; supported document languages and translation controls are not described. | Yes Six languages built in. Built-in templates print in English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch or Italian and lay out addresses for each destination country. Dates and prices follow the region you choose on every template. The app's own screens are in English. |
| Shopify Flow and Sidekick | Not described Not described in its listing or documentation. | Yes Works with both. Six Flow actions print an order's Print Chain, packing slip, invoice, return slip or gift receipt, or one pick list for your open orders. Four Flow triggers run when a document prints, a print fails, a Print Station goes offline or you near your monthly order limit. Sidekick answers questions about your order allowance, your printers and what printed. |
| Shopify POS | Not described in its listing or documentation. | In-store POS sales print automatically on a Windows or macOS computer at the store (not on the POS device, phone or tablet), for example a kitchen ticket on a receipt printer, with each location's tickets sent to that location's printer. Automatic printing can skip them instead. |
| Printing documents yourself | Yes Click a printing button, or choose Print with Printrooster for orders selected in the Shopify orders list. How the print reaches your printer is not described. | Yes Printing from your browser needs nothing installed: open an order, choose Print → Autoprinter, pick a document, and print the preview like any web page. |
"Not described" means Printrooster's App Store listing and documentation, cited below, don't mention it. It is not a statement that Printrooster can't do it. Every other Printrooster fact comes from those pages.
When Printrooster is enough
- You print in batches by hand and want new orders sorted for you, for example by shipping method, tag or vendor.
- You want printed orders to drop out of the queue so nobody prints the same order twice.
- You write HTML and Liquid, or want the developer's help building a template.
When Autoprinter fits better
- You want packing slips and invoices to print by themselves when an order is placed, paid or fulfilled.
- You buy shipping labels in Shopify and want them to come out of your label printer with zero clicks.
- You print on more than one kind of paper, or from more than one location. Sheets, 4 × 6 labels and receipt rolls each go to their own printer, and an order split across locations gets one packing slip per location.
- You'd rather not write code. Built-in templates are set up with switches, print in six languages, and Print Rules can choose a different template for each order.
Autoprinter and Printrooster: common questions
Autoprinter works with the printers your Windows or macOS computer already uses, and every feature is on every plan, including Free.
-
Can Printrooster print orders automatically?
Its listing and help center describe no automatic printing: new orders are sorted under printing buttons, and a person clicks a button to print them. Autoprinter prints the documents you choose when an order is placed, paid or fulfilled, with nobody pressing Print.
-
Can Printrooster print the shipping labels I buy in Shopify?
Not described in its listing or documentation. Autoprinter prints the shipping labels you buy in Shopify with zero clicks: click Print shipping label as usual and the label comes out of your label printer. You keep buying labels in Shopify at Shopify Shipping rates; Autoprinter doesn't sell labels, and label capture works in Google Chrome on a computer.
-
Does Autoprinter print a packing slip for each location of a split order?
Yes. Each fulfillment location gets its own packing slip listing only its items, and a Print Rule can send it to the Print Station at that location. The invoice still covers the whole order, and a split order counts once toward your monthly orders. If you pack every order in one place, choose one set per order instead.
-
Can I use my Printrooster templates in Autoprinter?
Custom templates use HTML and CSS with Handlebars-style variables such as
{{order.name}}, not Liquid, so a template written in Liquid for Printrooster needs changes before it works in Autoprinter. Or start without code: built-in templates are set up with switches, and 30+ sample templates are ready to install. -
What do I need to install to use Autoprinter?
Install the Autoprinter Desktop Utility on a Windows or macOS computer to print straight to your printers, automatically or in bulk. It prints to any printer that computer can already print to; keep it awake while you print. Shipping labels also use the Autoprinter Chrome Extension in Google Chrome. Printing from your browser needs nothing installed.
-
Is Autoprinter free?
Yes, for up to 50 orders a month sent to your printers, with every feature and no card needed. Printing from your browser never counts. Paid plans start at $10 a month for 500 orders.
