Autoprinter vs Order Printer Pro

Order Printer Pro doesn't print orders automatically: every print is someone pressing Print in the browser. Autoprinter prints them for you, sending packing slips and invoices to your own printers as orders come in, and prints Shopify shipping labels with zero clicks.

Order Printer Pro is a PDF invoice and order printer app. You edit its templates in HTML, CSS and Liquid, print them through your browser, and can give customers PDF download links in Shopify emails and on the order status page. It also makes quotes for draft orders and refund or credit notes.

If you press Print yourself, or you mainly want customers to download their invoices, Order Printer Pro may be all you need. If you want printing to happen without you, that is what Autoprinter is for.

Why choose Autoprinter over Order Printer Pro

  • Prints by itself. Packing slips and invoices print when an order is placed, paid or fulfilled, with nobody pressing Print.
  • Zero-click shipping labels. Buy a label in Shopify as usual and it comes out of your label printer, with no print dialog.
  • Labels, sheets and receipt rolls, each on its own printer. Letter, A4, 4 × 6 labels and 80 mm or 58 mm receipts go straight to the printer that matches.
  • No code needed. Built-in templates are set up with switches and print in six languages, and Print Rules choose the template for each order.

Topic Order Printer Pro Autoprinter
Automatic printing No. The app has no printer, desktop program, print service or trigger setting; every print is someone pressing Print in the browser. Its Automated PDFs are PDF download links for customers, not printing. Yes. The documents you choose print by themselves when an order is placed, paid or fulfilled, with nobody pressing Print. You pick the trigger and turn it on in Settings.
Shipping labels No carrier shipping labels. Its "integrated address labels" are a sticker area on the packing slip. Zero-click. Buy a label in Shopify, click Print shipping label as usual, and it comes out of your label printer with no print dialog. Needs Google Chrome with the Autoprinter Chrome Extension; you keep buying labels in Shopify.
Printers and paper sizes Prints through your browser's print window, with no printer setting in the app. Templates are designed for A4 or Letter. Its help center gives a CSS change to shrink them onto A5 or 4 × 6 paper and says narrow receipt or thermal paper won't work. Straight to your printers, on the right paper. Prints to any printer on a Windows or macOS computer through the Autoprinter Desktop Utility, or from your browser. Paper sizes are Letter, A4, 4 × 6 in thermal labels, and 80 mm or 58 mm receipt rolls, and the paper size decides which printer gets each document.
Choosing a document per order No rules. Each template can be pre-selected for orders, draft orders or POS orders. Print Rules choose which template prints, and on which Print Station, for each order. A rule can match more than 15 order details, such as sales channel, tags, SKU, product collection, fulfillment location, ship-to country and order total.
Templates Edited as code, in HTML, CSS and Liquid. You upload your logo and pick an accent color in the app. Editing without code needs Order Printer Templates, a separate app sold as a one-time purchase. No code needed. Built-in templates you adjust with switches and drop-downs, plus 30+ sample templates. Custom templates in HTML and CSS with Handlebars-style variables. No limit on the number of templates, on any plan.
Price Free for stores with up to 50 orders a month; a 30-day cycle over 50 orders is charged $10. Starter is $10 a month for 51 to 500 orders, Growth $20 for 501 to 5,000 and Scale $40 for 5,001 to 10,000, with more options above that. The app picks the plan from your store's order count, whether or not orders are printed. Paid plans start with 14 days free. E-invoicing and Peppol is a $10 a month add-on. Counts orders, not documents: an order sent to your printers counts once however many documents it prints, and printing from your browser never counts. Free for 50 orders a month. Basic is $10 a month for 500 orders, Pro $30 for 2,500, and Unlimited $100 for unlimited orders. Every feature is on every plan, so there is no trial: start on Free and upgrade when you need more orders.
Shopify Flow and Sidekick The app has no Flow settings, and its App Store listing doesn't list Flow. Works with both. Six Flow actions print an order's Print Chain, packing slip, invoice, return slip or gift receipt, or one pick list for your open orders. Four Flow triggers run when a document prints, a print fails, a Print Station goes offline or you near your monthly order limit. Sidekick answers questions about your order allowance, your printers and what printed.
Orders split across locations A separate packing slip for each fulfillment needs a custom template; its help center supplies the code. One packing slip per location. An order split across fulfillment locations gets a packing slip for each location, listing only that location's items, or one set for the whole order if you pack in one place.
Document languages A template can print in each customer's language once you add the wording for every language to its Liquid code. Six languages built in. Built-in templates print in English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch or Italian and lay out addresses for each destination country. Dates and prices follow the region you choose on every template. The app's own screens are in English.
Bulk printing Select orders in the Shopify orders list and choose Print with Order Printer Pro. Up to 250 orders at a time. Select orders in the Shopify orders list and send their documents to your printers, or open one combined preview and print it from your browser. A pick slip covers up to 50 orders.
Documents Five templates come installed: receipt or invoice, packing slip, returns form, quote for draft orders, and refund or credit note. You can also add a commercial invoice for exports and a purchase order for dropshipping. Packing slips, invoices, pick slips, return slips and gift receipts. Sample templates add sales receipts, kitchen tickets and pickup slips.
Shopify POS Prints from the Shopify POS and Shopify mobile apps through the device's own printing. In-store POS sales print automatically on a Windows or macOS computer at the store (not on the POS device, phone or tablet), for example a kitchen ticket on a receipt printer, with each location's tickets sent to that location's printer. Automatic printing can skip them instead.

Order Printer Pro facts come from its App Store listing, its help center and the app as installed on a Shopify store, all cited below.

When Order Printer Pro is enough

  • You print orders yourself, up to 250 at a time, and your browser's print window doesn't slow you down.
  • You want customers to download PDF invoices from Shopify emails, the order status page or their account.
  • You need quotes for draft orders, refund or credit notes, commercial invoices, or Peppol e-invoicing.
  • You print from the Shopify POS or mobile app on the device itself, or you already write Liquid.

When Autoprinter fits better

  • You want packing slips and invoices to print by themselves when an order is placed, paid or fulfilled.
  • You buy shipping labels in Shopify and want them to come out of your label printer with zero clicks.
  • You print on more than one kind of paper, or from more than one location. Sheets, 4 × 6 labels and receipt rolls each go to their own printer, and an order split across locations gets one packing slip per location.
  • You run a cafe, bakery or shop counter and want in-store POS sales to print a ticket at the counter by themselves.
  • You'd rather not write code. Built-in templates are set up with switches, print in six languages, and Print Rules can choose a different template for each order.

Autoprinter and Order Printer Pro: common questions

Autoprinter works with the printers your Windows or macOS computer already uses, and every feature is on every plan, including Free.

  1. Can Order Printer Pro print orders automatically?

No. Order Printer Pro has no printer, desktop program, print service or trigger setting, so every print is someone pressing Print in the browser; its Automated PDFs are download links for customers. Autoprinter prints the documents you choose when an order is placed, paid or fulfilled, with nobody pressing Print.

  2. Is Autoprinter free?

Yes, for up to 50 orders a month sent to your printers, with every feature and no card needed. Printing from your browser never counts. Paid plans start at $10 a month for 500 orders.

  3. What do I need to install to use Autoprinter?

Install the Autoprinter Desktop Utility on a Windows or macOS computer to print straight to your printers, automatically or in bulk. It prints to any printer that computer can already print to; keep it awake while you print. Shipping labels also use the Autoprinter Chrome Extension in Google Chrome. Printing from your browser needs nothing installed.

  4. Does Autoprinter work on a Shopify POS iPad or phone?

No. A Windows or macOS computer at the store does the printing, and in-store POS sales print there automatically, for example a kitchen ticket on a receipt printer.

  5. Can I use my Order Printer Pro templates in Autoprinter?

Custom templates use HTML and CSS with Handlebars-style variables such as {{order.name}}, not Liquid, so a template written in Liquid for Order Printer Pro needs changes before it works in Autoprinter. Or start without code: built-in templates are set up with switches, and 30+ sample templates are ready to install.

  6. Can Order Printer Pro print shipping labels?

Not carrier shipping labels: its "integrated address labels" are a sticker area on the packing slip. Autoprinter prints the shipping labels you buy in Shopify with zero clicks: click Print shipping label as usual and the label comes out of your label printer. You keep buying labels in Shopify at Shopify Shipping rates; Autoprinter doesn't sell labels, and label capture works in Google Chrome on a computer.
