Autoprinter vs Shopify Order Printer

Shopify Order Printer is a free app made by Shopify. You customize packing slips, invoices and pick lists with HTML, CSS and Liquid, then print them through your browser.

Autoprinter sends documents straight to the printers on your computer, can print them automatically as orders come in, and prints Shopify shipping labels with zero clicks. If you are happy pressing Print yourself, Order Printer may be all you need. If you want printing to happen without you, that is what Autoprinter is for.

Automatic printing Not described in the Shopify pages cited below. Prints the documents you choose when an order is placed, paid or fulfilled. It stays off until you turn it on.
Shipping labels Not described in the Shopify pages cited below. Zero-click. Buy a label in Shopify and it prints on your label printer with no print dialog. Needs Google Chrome with the Autoprinter extension. You still buy labels in Shopify.
Printers and paper sizes Prints with your browser's print function. Documents can also be saved as PDF. Prints from your browser, or straight to any printer on a Windows or macOS computer through the Autoprinter Desktop Utility. Paper sizes are Letter, A4, 4 × 6 in thermal labels, and 80 mm or 58 mm receipt rolls. The paper size decides which printer gets each document.
Document languages Not described in the Shopify pages cited below. Built-in templates print in English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch or Italian and lay out addresses for each destination country. Dates and prices follow the region you choose on every template. The app's own screens are in English.
Choosing a document per order Not described in the Shopify pages cited below. Print Rules pick the template, and the Print Station, for each order. A rule can match the order source, sales channel, app, tags, payment status, fulfillment status, order note, ship-to state or country, fulfillment location, order total, payment method, shipping method, product title, SKU and product collection.
Shopify Flow and Sidekick Not described in the Shopify pages cited below. Six Flow actions print an order's Print Chain, packing slip, invoice, return slip or gift receipt, or one pick list for your open orders. Four Flow triggers run when a document prints, a print fails, a Print Station goes offline or you near your monthly order limit. Sidekick answers questions about your order allowance, your printers and what printed.
More than one computer or location A pick list can be made for one location you choose. Other multi-location printing is not described in the Shopify pages cited below. Pair a Print Station on each computer, and Print Rules send each document to the right one. An order split across fulfillment locations gets one packing slip per location, listing only that location's items, or one set for the whole order if you pack in one place.
Shopify POS Prints documents directly from Shopify POS. Prints in-store POS sales automatically on a computer at the store, for example a kitchen ticket on a receipt printer, with each location's tickets sent to that location's printer. Automatic printing can skip them instead. It does not run on a POS device, phone or tablet.

"Not described" means the Shopify App Store listing and help pages cited below don't mention it. It is not a statement that Order Printer can't do it.

When Order Printer is enough

  • You want a free app, made and supported by Shopify.
  • You print orders yourself, up to 50 at a time, and your browser's print dialog doesn't slow you down.
  • You already write Liquid, or you want to print documents from inside the Shopify POS app.

When Autoprinter fits better

  • You want packing slips and invoices to print by themselves when an order is placed, paid or fulfilled.
  • You buy shipping labels in Shopify and want them to come out of your label printer with zero clicks.
  • You print on more than one kind of paper, or from more than one location. Sheets, 4 × 6 labels and receipt rolls each go to their own printer, and an order split across locations gets one packing slip per location.
  • You run a cafe, bakery or shop counter and want in-store POS sales to print a ticket at the counter by themselves.
  • You'd rather not write code. Built-in templates are set up with switches, print in six languages, and Print Rules can choose a different template for each order.

Things to know about Autoprinter

  • Printing straight to a printer, including automatic printing and shipping labels, needs a Windows or macOS computer running the Autoprinter Desktop Utility. Keep that computer awake while you print. Printing from your browser needs nothing installed.
  • It doesn't run on a POS device, phone or tablet.
  • The Free plan covers 50 orders a month sent to your printers. Past that you need a paid plan, starting at $10 a month.
  • Custom templates use HTML and CSS with Handlebars-style variables such as {{order.name}}, not Liquid. A template written in Liquid for Order Printer needs changes before it works in Autoprinter.
  • Label capture works in Google Chrome on a computer. Autoprinter prints the labels you buy in Shopify; it doesn't sell labels.
